  • Year 2 Victorian Day

    Thu 15 Apr 2021

To consolidate their learning from Spring term, Year 2 had a Victorian Day in  school. Everyone came in dressed up as Victorian children, ready for a fun-filled day of learning.

They began the day by meeting Florence Nightingale, who explained to the children why she became a nurse and how she was preparing for a journey to Scutari hospital. The children helped make some things to take with them, including clay candle holders, medicine boxes, victory badges and greetings cards. They also had the opportunity to apply for a job in the hospital and be interviewed by Florence!

After break it was time to be a history detective. Whilst travelling from London to France, some of the suitcases of Florence and her companions got mixed up. The children had to search for clues as to who they suitcases belonged to, and had the opportunity to see and hold some Victorian artefacts and replicas.

In the afternoon they arrived at Scutari hospital and using a range of props and resources had the opportunity to act in character as nurses, patients, gardeners, cooks, and cleaners. This helped the children to understand what life might have been like there, as well as develop speaking and listening skills.

At the end of the day we discussed what happened to Florence after the war, and explained how she had died 1910 after a life of amazing work.

The children had a fantastic day and learnt a lot!
