In history, Year 2 have been learning about how nursing has changed over the last couple of hundred years, and the significant people that helped shape modern nursing. To support this they had a workshop all about Florence Nightingale where they got to meet her and learn about her life. First they had to help Florence prepare for her journey to Scutari hospital by making candle holders, nurse sashes and medicine boxes among other things, and children could even apply to go with her and have a job interview. Our next stop was the train station in Paris en route to Scutari where the children had to use their historical detective skills to help identify some lost luggage and then learn about some of the other people that went to Scutari. In the afternoon the hall was transformed into Scutari hospital and children had the opportunity to role play different jobs such as cooks, cleaners, gardeners, nurses and injured soldiers. It was a fantastic day and the children learnt so much.
