Mirror, Mirror

Lesson 1

We started our new topic by comparing a clear drinking glass, a stained glass window and a painting. We had many ideas for how they were the same or different but we did ultimately realise that they also let different amounts of light through. We learnt three scientific terms to describe this:

  • translucent;
  • transparent; and
  • opaque.

We learnt that translucent items let some light through and so we can see through them a little bit. We learnt that transparent items let all light through and we can see through them completely. Lastly, opaque items, we discovered, don't let any light through at all and you cannot see through them.

With this in mind, we started to search the classroom for things that were transparent, translucent and opaque. We then came back together as a class and shared our different ideas. Our compiled findings are below:

"Pupils at Chambersbury Primary School receive a good quality of education. They know staff want them to do well." OFSTED, November 2022
