Online Safety Newsletters for Parents & Carers

Keeping children safe online is just as important as keeping them safe offline. The constant technology advances means online games and apps are part of everyday life, and it is natural that many of you might feel online activity time could benefit your child educational, socially and positively.  Whilst this is a parental decision, we would advise that you still ensure a balance of online and real-world activity. Many popular games and social media platforms include chat features, livestreaming, in-app purchases, and the ability to connect with strangers, which can expose children to risks such as cyberbullying, scams and inappropriate content. Parents and carers should regularly review privacy settings, limit who can contact their child, disable location sharing and have open conversations about online behaviour and reporting concerns. Staying informed about the apps and games children use and encouraging honest communication can significantly reduce risks.

Please monitor their online activity and check that all options, on each accessible device within the home, are age appropriate.  For example, WhatsApp is age 13+, X, Instagram, Tiktok and many other social media apps are age 13+ .  Gaming has a PEGI age rating system just like the DVD classification system and it is easy to find out what is and what is not appropriate by visiting https://pegi.info/page/pegi-age-ratings.
