World War 1 Poppy Poetry 2019-2020

Poppy Haikus for WW1

During the first week after half term, year 2 spent some time thinking about Remembrance day and what it was about. We read a little bit about what happens on Remembrance Day and thought about all the people that have been affected by war.

We also watched an animated video (which can be watched below) showing how some animals might have been affected by the ongoing battles, and how once the war was over a beautiful field of poppies grew. We thought a lot about these poppies and how they are used as a symbol today.

We spent time describing them using adjectives, adverbs, alliteration and similes. We used this description to write haikus, using our learning from the donkey haikus but in a different context. Haikus are special poems that have just 3 lines and the syllable structure 5, 7, 5. We then performed them to the class. Some of us found this quite scary but we all had a go in the end.
